It is with sincere gratitude and appreciation that we send well wishes to Principal J. Michael Murphey, AIA, NCARB, as he retires from The Lunz Group after 45 years in the architectural business.
Prior to joining The Lunz Group, Mike Murphey was the President of WMB-ROI, an architectural firm based in Lakeland, FL for more than 30 years. Mike received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. He practiced architecture in Knoxville, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Lakeland. He merged his firm, The Design Group, to form Wallis Murphey Boyington Architects in 1995, which would rebrand to WMB-ROI in the 2010s.
During his prolific career, he developed substantial expertise in industrial, manufacturing, and logistics design, completing more than 1,000 projects. He has designed more than 9 million square feet, and cultivated specialized experience in the commercial and industrial space for the firm. Many look to Mike for his insight on trends in the design of distribution and logistics industry facilities.
In addition, he created dozens of high-end residences and designed 34 building projects for Florida Southern College, 18 of which were constructed. Notable Florida Southern College buildings include the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center, the Christoverson Humanities Building, the Wynee Warden Dance Studio, the Joe K. & Alberta Blanton Nursing Building, the Jean and Sal Capmisi, Sr., Academic Center for Physical Therapy, and The Roberts Academy.
Mike’s strength was uncovering his clients’ specific business objectives and then designing pragmatic solutions. He is most proud of the team of associates he had the privilege to work with over the years. Mike is most honored to have worked for many of Lakeland’s most prominent leaders. Some of the most impactful include Greg Ruthven and Brandon Clark with The Ruthvens, Wesley Beck with Aspyre Properties, Hal and Marjorie Roberts, and Dr. Kerr and Terry Dennis with Florida Southern College.
